Indie Titles To Get Excited About In 2024

Indie games are the heart of the video game industry. I am always on the look out for upcoming indies that seem unique and 2024 is FILLED with titles that have the potential to be really creative, fun and exciting. So let me list a few that are worth being on the lookout for this year.

Little Kitty, Big City

We are only a few days away from this game and maybe this is because I own a black cat myself, but I am SO excited for this! Stray came out in 2022 and taught us there is a genre we never even knew we wanted - cat based adventure games! This game is Double Dagger Studios debut title and it looks gorgeous! This is definitely a cozy game, so cozy in fact you can take a nap! I love the art style and the game play gives me Untitled Goose game vibes! Also...you can put hats on a cat.

Release date 9th May 2024

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch

Ghost Bike

Messhof, developer of Nidhogg is releasing a new title that looks super interesting and beautiful. Now let me try and explain the premise as best as I can! You play a character exploring a semi open-world on a bicycle trying to bring back 'Ghost Bikes' who are magical couriers that once rode between the world of the living and the dead. You are able to customize your bike as you travel around completing a variety of challenges from pro peloton racing to, as the developer puts it, 'general tomfoolery'. But seriously, this game looks beautiful!

Release date: TBC

Platforms: PC, Xbox Series S/X, PS5

Thank Goodness You're Here

Now I am very excited about this game because it is part of a genre that is criminally under rated in the video game world...comedy games! This game is described by developer Coal Supper as a 'Comedy Slapformer' I have no idea what that means but I cannot wait to find out! The developers are from Yorkshire in the UK and speaking from experience, Yorkshire sense of humour...is the best! The art style looks actually stunning and I think a lot of the comedy comes from the wacky character designs! You honestly owe it to yourself to Youtube the trailer right now....go one....Youtube it....I will wait. Ok now you have watched the trailer, you see what I mean? I have high hopes for this game and lets see more developers making comedy based games, because real life is too serious!

Platforms: PC, PS5, Switch

Holstin

This is a polish survival horror game (Developed by SONKA) that seems to mix the play styles of both Resident Evil 1 and 4 together in a creative and innovative way I have not seen before. This game has you switch between a top down isometric view to an over the shoulder shooter seamlessly! It is set in 1992, in a Polish town called Jeziorne-Kolonia, that has been taken over by the undead. It has beautiful handcrafted pixel art and has the mixture of puzzles and combat that every survival horror should have. I love when I get to experience and learn about different cultures and places through video games, and the fact that this one is my favourite genre makes me so excited!

Release date: 2024

Platforms: PC, Xbox One and Series S/X, Switch, PS5 and PS4.

Afterlove EP

This is a beautiful looking game by Pixelnesia that I am sure will make me feel emotions! The art style looks truly beautiful! It is a mix between a narrative adventure, dating sim and rhythm game with multiple story paths. It is about Rama a musician dealing with the death of his partner Cinta. This is yet another game I am excited about because of its setting. I cannot wait to see Indonesian culture represented in this video game, and be given the opportunity to explore a beautiful story in an even more beautiful world!

Release Date: 2024

Platforms: PC, Switch, PS$ and PS5

This is just a drop in the ocean of Indie games to be excited for this year! I just thought I would share the ones that have caught my eye recently! Are you excited for any of these? Perhaps there is one I haven't mentioned that you are personally excited for! Comment below!

'Nine Sols' Developer Red Candle Games Interview

'Nine Sols' is my favourite game that has been released this year. I was lucky enough to interview the very talented developer 'Red Candle Games' about their game and their studio. Nine Sols is a lore rich, hand-drawn 2D action-platformer featuring Sekiro-inspired deflection focused combat. Embark on a journey of Asian fantasy, explore the land once home to an ancient alien race, and follow a vengeful hero’s quest to slay the 9 Sols, formidable rulers of this forsaken realm. In New Kunlun, hero Yi has awakened the 9 rulers of this forsaken realm. To defeat the 9 Sols in the deserted city. New Kunlun, the Solarian’s last sanctuary, has remained quiet for centuries. Inside this vast realm, the ancient gods left mortals with a promised land that is forever protected by the sacred rituals, yet the truth of this world remains unknown to most. Everything changes when Yi, a long forgotten hero from the past, is awoken by a human child. Follow Yi on his vengeful quest against t...

Interview With The Team Behind BALLS: The Monster-Catchin' Musical Comedy

Recently I was lucky enough to interview the guys behind the upcoming musical  BALLS: The Monster-Catchin’ Musical Comédy. This is an interactive musical parody based on a popular game that involves catching monsters in little balls...I'm sure you can guess which game I am referring to! Thank you to Harrison and the team for taking time to answer my question! What inspired you to write “ BALLS: The Monster-Catchin’ Musical Comédy?” Our childhoods were about gaming together and fighting together and trading binders full of monster cards that we collected but never learned how to play with … together. Now that we’re old and weird, we’re nostalgic for the unfettered joy of in-person trades and the battles with buddies.  This show captures that feeling of shared, in-person fun. An engaging visual and imaginative experience, inside its own colorful universe, lovingly lampooning nostalgia, nerd culture, and the wide-eyed immersion of selecting “NEW GAME” for the very… first… time....

Duck Detective: The Secret Salami Review

Platforms: Switch, Xbox One, Windows, Linux, Xbox Series X/S, Mac This is a game about a grizzled, washed up, detective who is trying to solve a case to distract from his miserable and lonely life, also...he is a duck. 'Duck Detective: the secret salami' is a point and click mystery game by indie developer 'Happy Broccoli'. It is short, but engaging and provided a window into the life of hardened detective Eugene McQuacklin, a character I would love to see more of in the future! The first thing that struck me about this game was the music. It has a jazz score that seems like it is pulled straight out of a classic Noir film. It not only added to tone that the game was going for, but also created a cozy gaming vibe. The voice acting is also perfect. The voice of Eugene McQuacklin was one of my favourite parts of the game. The voice actor plays the role with such sincerity which really adds to the comedy. The dead pan and serious delivery is reminiscent of Lesley Nielsen i...
