Hello, my name is Pepper and this is my review of 'Little Kitty, Big City' from a black cat's perspective.
Little Kitty, Big City...CATastrophe or PURRfect?
Firstly I must say I was excited to see black cats represented in a positive way for once in any form of media. We have spent decades trying to get away from the negative stereotypes originally perpetuated by the witch hysteria that began in Europe in the 1400s. Although we were often seen appearing alongside witches, we do not condone their behavior and were unaware of there actions on account of the fact that we are cats. The stigma that we are 'unlucky' is both defamation AND slander and is extremely hurtful. Here are some examples of negative black cat representation that have really damaged our image to the public: Cat Woman, Sylvester (Looney Toons), Lucifer (Cinderella), Snowball II (The Simpsons) and of course Black Cat (the Spider-man villain). Although there has been the occasional positive representation, it has been a drop in the ocean.
So when I saw a game was being released called 'Little Kitty, Big City' I was skeptical to say the least. Well I am here to say that my skepticism was completely unfounded! This game presents a black cat who is keen to help others, who is mischievous, sure, but at the heart is a good person just trying to get home. The opening section to me was terrifying, as it starts with a cat that looks much like me, falling out of a building and almost dying. However from there the game got much more chill and I was finally able to relax and enjoy a character I can FINALLY relate to.
I was glued to the TV the entire time and would often look back at my human as if to say 'I do that!' In 'Little Kitty, Big City' you can chase your tail, hide in boxes, chase birds, swipe at strangers, sneak around whilst crouching low to the ground, play with balls and steal random things for no reason! You do make friends with several birds, which I did find confusing, as I hate birds and spend my entire life plotting their deaths, but I was able to put my prejudices aside and become invested in a compelling story.
One aspect that I felt really connected with me, is the fact that whilst playing this game you are CONSTANTLY distracted by random little side quests. This might be the most accurate part of the game, because I do that all the time! I cannot tell you how many times I am on my way to have a poop in my litter box and then get distracted by a random piece of fluff on the floor or a sunlight reflection on the wall. Also the cat sounds JUST LIKE ME! It was scary how much they nailed my purring sounds, or the little chirp I do when I hop up a ledge. I found myself wondering whether it is in fact me who did the voice acting and I have just somehow forgotten
I found the hats a very interesting collectible and was extremely confused as to why this cat is voluntarily choosing to wear items of clothing. This part was unrealistic and actually took me out of the game, because I would never in a thousand cat years wear anything voluntarily. However this is the only negative in a long line of positives.
Overall I believe this game brought myself and my human closer, as they were able to experience my world in an accurate and enjoyable way, which I think helps them appreciate where I am coming from when I knock over all the plants in the middle of the night and wake everyone up. I would like to see more video games like this and perhaps a more accurate sequel, where maybe the cat is played by me and it doesn't get lost in the big city but stays home, naps and eats salmon paste...just an idea. You could call it 'Little Kitty, Big Settee' and it is just about me sat on a sofa. Thank you for reading, it took me a long time to write this, as it is near impossible to type with paws.
Please read my human's review which will go into more detail and will be coming soon!
