Upcoming Video Game Movies/TV Shows To Be Excited About

We are in a beautiful era, an era that I could only dream of when I was a small boy watching the nightmare fuel that is the 1993 Super Mario Bros. Movie staring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. We are living in a time where video game adaptations are coming out and they are actually good! I never thought there would be a world where my dad knows what The Last of Us and Fallout is! Video games have rich and wonderful worlds, with complex well-written characters and deep story lines that are finally being reflected in the TV and movie adaptations! So with that in mind, here are some future announced TV shows and movies I am SUPER Excited for!

Horizon: 2074 - Netflix Series

I love the Horizon world, robot dinosaurs might be the coolest two words you can put next to each other. I am happy this is a series rather than a movie, because I really want to see the world fleshed out as it is so rich and diverse. I do worry though about the special effects, I know Netflix have deep pockets, but the budget to create this show is going to be massive! But if they pull it off to the level we just saw with the Fallout TV series then we are in for something really special. The show is going to be led by Steve Blackman who has recently worked on Netflix's Umbrella Academy. The show will apparently be a prequel to the games, focusing on the downfall of civilization. I think that is a very smart choice and will give the people who have played the games a fresh, new story rather than just repeating the video game's plot. There is no release date yet and it is in its early stages of production so I think it will be a couple of years before we see this show, but I am excited!

Ghost of Tsushima

Now this one I am really curious about! Ghost of Tsushima is a game that is based on classic samurai movies. Now we are getting a movie, based on a game, based on movies. But if it means we get an awesome samurai movie, I am in! The game is reportedly going to follow Jin Sakai's story from the game. Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick franchise, will be leading the project and that is the bit that excites me the most. I imagine this will be a bloody, gory, adrenaline fueled movie and I am so down for that! Peter Kang of Sucker Punch studios will also oversee the project, which is always great to see the game developers having a major role in adaptations. I also think it would be cool if we have some black and white samurai duels like the game! I wonder if we will get him chasing foxes around or getting his bare arse out and sitting in a hot spring reciting a haiku - one can only hope! The script is reportedly finished but it is still looking like 2026 before we will be seeing this released.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft

This is honestly the project I am most excited for, for multiple reasons! Firstly, because it is coming out in 2024, which means that I don't need to wait much longer! Secondly because the Japanese anime art style looks beautiful and thirdly because Hayley Atwell is voicing Lara! This is another project that is being released by Netflix, which shows that Netflix is really leaning into the video game adaptations with the numerous video game projects they have cooking! I recently played through the Tomb Raider remastered trilogy and I am ready for more Lara Croft. If you have not seen the trailer for this yet then look it up, it looks stunning! Also, hot take but the Alicia Vikander movie was excellent and people were overly harsh about it!

The Last of Us Season 2

After the flawless first season, I cannot even begin to express my excitement for season 2! I am one of the people who prefers the second game to the first and am so curious to see the TV adaptation focus on the dark, twisted plot from The Last of Us 2! They have not said what the plot will be yet, but what we do know is that Kaitlyn Dever will be playing Abby, Young Manzino will be Jesse and Isabella Merced is Dina. So based on this knowledge we can assume it will follow the plot, however I think they will split the second game over 2 season, as the game is so huge and HBO like money. This is set to release next year.

 Duke Nukem - Movie

Its time to kick ass and chew bubble gum...and I'm all out of gum! That is right there is a Duke Nukem movie in the early stages of production and I am so excited about it! I grew up playing Duke Nukem 3D on the N64 and I was waaayyyyy too young to be playing that game. There has been no cast announced yet, but what we do know is that Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Creators of Cobra Kai) are supposedly producing the movie! Now if anyone understands over the top 80s action parodies - it is that team! When I think of some of the cheesey and cringing things said by Jonny Lawrence in Cobra Kai, the thought of that team taking on Duke Nukem is a match made in heaven! Hail to the King, baby!

Borderlands

Now I am going to be honest here - The games have never clicked with me. I have tried them several times and never been able to get into them. But I also never really got into Fallout and the TV show came out and turned out to be amazing! So I am going to give Borderlands a chance, based on how awesome the cast and crew are. Eli Roth is the director and Craig Mazin, writer of Chernobyl, has written the screenplay. The cast includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt and Jack Black so they really have spent some serious money on this movie. Also the trailer showed that the world looks interesting and it got a couple of genuine chuckles out of me with some of the jokes. So you know what? I will give Borderlands another chance! The release date for this is 9th August this year, so we do not have long to wait!

Here are a few honorable mentions of rumored projects that I have heard about and am also excited for (if they actually get made):

Splinter Cell - TV Show

Bioshock

Return to Silent Hill

Until Dawn

The Legend of Zelda,

God of War

I personally am loving that we live in a world with so many video game adaptations happening and cannot wait to see what other projects get announced. Let me know which of these shows you are most excited for, and what video games you want to see adapted! Comment below!

Interview With The Team Behind BALLS: The Monster-Catchin' Musical Comedy

Recently I was lucky enough to interview the guys behind the upcoming musical  BALLS: The Monster-Catchin’ Musical Comédy. This is an interactive musical parody based on a popular game that involves catching monsters in little balls...I'm sure you can guess which game I am referring to! Thank you to Harrison and the team for taking time to answer my question! What inspired you to write “ BALLS: The Monster-Catchin’ Musical Comédy?” Our childhoods were about gaming together and fighting together and trading binders full of monster cards that we collected but never learned how to play with … together. Now that we’re old and weird, we’re nostalgic for the unfettered joy of in-person trades and the battles with buddies.  This show captures that feeling of shared, in-person fun. An engaging visual and imaginative experience, inside its own colorful universe, lovingly lampooning nostalgia, nerd culture, and the wide-eyed immersion of selecting “NEW GAME” for the very… first… time....

Duck Detective: The Secret Salami Review

Platforms: Switch, Xbox One, Windows, Linux, Xbox Series X/S, Mac This is a game about a grizzled, washed up, detective who is trying to solve a case to distract from his miserable and lonely life, also...he is a duck. 'Duck Detective: the secret salami' is a point and click mystery game by indie developer 'Happy Broccoli'. It is short, but engaging and provided a window into the life of hardened detective Eugene McQuacklin, a character I would love to see more of in the future! The first thing that struck me about this game was the music. It has a jazz score that seems like it is pulled straight out of a classic Noir film. It not only added to tone that the game was going for, but also created a cozy gaming vibe. The voice acting is also perfect. The voice of Eugene McQuacklin was one of my favourite parts of the game. The voice actor plays the role with such sincerity which really adds to the comedy. The dead pan and serious delivery is reminiscent of Lesley Nielsen i...
