My Top 5 'State Of Play' Announcements

PlayStation dropped a State of Play at 11pm (GMT) on May 30th and there was a nice mixture of things to get excited for. There were some games that stood out for me, and I will go over the five announcements I am most excited for and why.

Firewalk's Concord (August 23rd 2024)

The game is a 5v5 first person Online Shooter set on different planets in a futuristic/sci-fi world. It is kind of Overwatch meets Guardians of the Galaxy. It is about taking jobs to earn money as a 'freegunner' fighting on different planets. Each character has their own unique abilities and the game looks super fast paced with unique weapons. Also between games you will get short cutscenes of your team interacting in their downtime. The main reason I am excited for this is for the characters and the world. Although it does seem like a Guardians of the Galaxy clone, I feel like there was enough in the trailer to suggest it will have it's own identity. I love the idea of the banter during battles and the weekly cutscenes building up the story and character dynamics.

Where Winds Meet (2024)

I think this looked like the most beautiful game in the show and made me think 'why don't we get more games set in ancient China?' 'Where Winds Meet' is an open-world action-adventure where you are a young martial artist fighting their way through a wind range of different enemies. The trailer showed what seemed like boss battles and they looked stunning. It reminded me of some of the Sifu boss battles, where the wold around you is so beautiful it is almost distracting. I see games like this and I am reminded how far video games have come! There is no launch date yet but apparently it will be launching next month in China, so we wont have long to wait!

Marvel Rivals Closed beta July 2024

If you don't already know, this is an Overwatch style game set in the Marvel Universe. If you want to know more I wrote an article about the reactions to the previews of this game that happened a couple of weeks back. We did not know this was coming to PS5 and now we do! A few characters and skins have been added and the one in particular I thought looked awesome was Venom! I was disappointed when I saw the first previews coming out and there was no console version announced. Then when I saw it pop up on State of Play I got extremely excited! This game looks like some multiplayer fun that I can get right behind!

Silent Hill 2 Remake (October 8th 2024)

Survival horror is my favourite genre of games and easily one of the most iconic survival horrors is Silent Hill 2. I have been anticipating this for a long while now and the fact that it is coming out in just a few months is really exciting to me. There was a Silent Hill event that showed off more gameplay right after the State of Play and that got me very hyped! I love that so many classic survival horrors are been remade right now, as it is bringing more people into a world I have been obsessed with for most of my gaming life! The trailer in the State of Play was OK, but the long gameplay trailer released afterwards was really cool and got some genuine jump scares out of me.

Astrobot September 6th 2024

Game of the show hands down! I am going to say it, PlayStation may have a 3D platformer on their hands that will rival the Mario games. The Astrobot games have both been excellent and have been so experimental and fun, so the fact that we are getting a full blown Astrobot platformer is so exciting to me. Also the fact that it is just called 'Astrobot' is pretty dope! The first thing that got me excited was the flying section where it looks like you tilt the remote to move. The reason this excited me is because it reminded me both of Star Fox and the flying sections of Spyro! Also the power ups look amazing, the boss fights look epic, and there is a cast of characters we already know and love making appearances along the way. My only problem with Astrobot is I don't really like the design of the bot himself, but apart from that this game looks like the 3D PlayStation Platformer we have all been crying out for!

Interview With The Team Behind BALLS: The Monster-Catchin' Musical Comedy

Recently I was lucky enough to interview the guys behind the upcoming musical  BALLS: The Monster-Catchin’ Musical Comédy. This is an interactive musical parody based on a popular game that involves catching monsters in little balls...I'm sure you can guess which game I am referring to! Thank you to Harrison and the team for taking time to answer my question! What inspired you to write “ BALLS: The Monster-Catchin’ Musical Comédy?” Our childhoods were about gaming together and fighting together and trading binders full of monster cards that we collected but never learned how to play with … together. Now that we’re old and weird, we’re nostalgic for the unfettered joy of in-person trades and the battles with buddies.  This show captures that feeling of shared, in-person fun. An engaging visual and imaginative experience, inside its own colorful universe, lovingly lampooning nostalgia, nerd culture, and the wide-eyed immersion of selecting “NEW GAME” for the very… first… time....

An Update On My Career

Okay, everyone, let's address the Elephant Mario in the room. Where have I been? I was posting just about every day, and suddenly, I disappeared faster than a speeding Concorde! In fact, quicker than that, I disappeared faster than the video game -  Concord . Well, I am here to tell you that it was not for bad reasons at all. In fact, I had a range of opportunities come my way, and I wanted to talk to you all about my experience working as a video game journalist in the industry, the good, the bad, and the [unnamed company that I will not directly address...but it does rhyme with Lame Aunt]...that's right you guessed it - Gamerant. So if you are a budding journalist reading this who wants some guidance in navigating the industry, or maybe you are just nosy and want to learn more about my life, well let's-a-go! So around June time I reached out to some gaming outlets around the world to see if I could be a guest writer on their stuff. I loved the direction my career was goin...
