The Sims 4 has announced a new expansion pack and it's...well it's interesting. Releasing on July 24th, the new Lovestruck expansion pack is causing some controversy among fans. But first, what are the features of this new pack?
The Sims 4 Lovestruck is a romance expansion pack set in a Latin American inspired world, Ciudad Enamorada. With this pack players can create an online dating profile on the 'Cupid's Corner' dating app (they definitly shouldve called it Simder) and match with other sims. Similar to Tinder and other real world dating apps, 'Cupid's Corner' allows Sims to create a profile, match with other Sims, and start conversations. Additionally, Sims will now have turn ons and turn offs (a feature which was included in the Sims 2), and can become a 'Romance Consultant'. The pack also includes a new dating system where players can choose where to go and what to do and will hopefully function better than weddings in My Wedding Stories (IYKYK). On dates Sims can play games, share food, sit on picnic blankets, cuddle in bed, and stargaze. New romantic interactions include: a new kiss, three new WooHoo spots and a new dance (watch the trailer to see the dance, I will never be able to unsee it). Other new features include 'Relationship Dynamics' as well as a new 'Romance Skill', two new aspirations, and 'Romance Satisfaction' which bridges the gap between the new 'Attraction System' and the existing romance bar in the base game. Lastly, free for all players in a new game update will be the new 'Romantic Boundaries' system which allows players to customize their Sim's boundaries and how Sims approach romantic relationships in terms of exclusivity.
Now why is this pack so controversial? Well many players are complaining about the lack of features for the price ($39.99/£34.99) claiming the gameplay features don't justify the price and that the expansion pack should have been a game pack instead. And personally, I have to agree. While I think the Latin American inspired world looks pretty and I'm happy to see more cultures represented, I can't help but think EA is playing into the stereotype of the overly sexual Latin lover. The gameplay also seems underwhelming, especially considering the last expansion pack allowed players to create apartments and the one before that introduced horses. Players are also worried the design a date feature will be similar to weddings in My Wedding Stories which launched broken and is still buggy to this day. I will be curious to see actual gameplay and a better look at the town from this pack to see if that changes my opinion, but I doubt it will. Overall, I have to agree with the comments, I find the trailer for the Lovestruck Expansion Pack to be underwhelming and overpriced.
