10 Reasons To be Excited For August

The reason I am excited for August is the lovely weather...NOT! Im gunna be closing the blinds, locking myself inside and playing video games baby! Brace yourself people, August is about to be harsh on your bank account! There are some incredible games on the way. So get a second job, pray for the death of a rich family member or sell a kidney - because you are going to need the cash!

Thank Goodness You're Here

Thank Goodness You’re Here
is without a doubt one of my most anticipated games of 2024 and it comes out in just a few days. The developers describe the game as a 'Comedy Slapformer' set in the Yorkshire town of Barnsworth and if there are two things I love, it is Yorkshire and giving someone a good slap! Also the cherry on this Bakewell tart of a game is that Matt Berry is one of the voice actors!

Cat Quest III

I have actually never played a Cat Quest game, but I saw the trailer for Cat Quest III and thought 'I need to change that!' Not only does it look like a fun pirate adventure game filled with cat based puns and a cute art style - it actually looks like it has great combat and a really interesting map to explore. Here is the description:

Play as a swashbuckling purrivateer in this 2.5D open-world action RPG set in a fantastical pirate-themed world – the Purribean - an archipelago swarming with Pi-rats searching for the Northern Star - a long-lost mythical treasure. Alongside your trusty spirit companion, set sail through the Purribean in your very own ship! But beware, the seas are dangerous, and a meow-tiny is nigh as the hordes of Pi-rats under the order of the Pirate King hunt you down…

Steamworld Heist 2

There is something incredibly addictive about the Steamworld games. I find the gun play so unique and reminds me of playing a game of pool but with bullets instead of balls and guns instead of cues! If you have not played one before I would advise picking up this one! Here is the description:

Join Captain Leeway and his ragtag crew as they uncover the enigmatic menace threatening the Great Sea. Equip and upgrade your crew for turn-based gunfights packed with ricochet action and engage in real-time naval combat. Get ready to aim, plot, and plunder in this uproarious Steambot adventure!

Farewell North

Farewell North' is an upcoming indie title from Kyle Banks and 'Mooneye Studio'. I am particularly excited about it because it is about two things I love - Scotland and dogs! Here is a quick description of 'Farewell North':

'Restore color to the desolate islands of Farewell North, an open world journey where you play as a border collie on an adventure with his owner through the Scottish Highlands. Explore land and sea, solve puzzles to reveal hidden paths, evade monsters, and free wildlife to bring color back to the world, all while revealing an emotional story about saying farewell.

Farewell North is about a woman on a personal journey deep in the Scottish highlands with her border collie, the player character. Dealing with a declining mental state and the emotions of a tragic loss, all color has left her world and it's up to you to bring it back as you aid her on her journey.'

Dustborn

Honestly, this game looks epic! I am a sucker for a comic book art style anyway, so I was in from the first moment I saw the game. Then add the fact that you are a superpowered rockband on a roadtrip and I am in! There is so much to talk about with this game. Firstly you have to manage your crew in a very Telltale games kind of way,
and recruit people along the journey. Then there are fun looking fight sequences and rhythm based sections where you rock out with your band. Trust me, check it out - it looks epic! Here is the description:

Ragtag crew? Check. Musical gear? Check. Tour bus and robot driver? Check. Stolen package? Check! Embark on a perilous road-trip across a Divided States of America. Use the power of words to shape relationships with your crew, get out of trouble and reach your final destination.

House of Golf 2

I love golf! (Not real golf, real golf is boring) but mini golf, crazy golf and, most of all, golf video games! Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour on Gamecube is an obsession of mine still to this day! I also loved Micro Machines V3 for the PS1 growing up! So the reason why I excited about House of Golf 2 is because it is Micro Machines meets Crazy Golf! I cannot wait to get a couple of friends over and play some golf...I just wish I had some friends. Here is the description:

House of Golf 2 delivers an engaging multiplayer golf experience with over 100 unique holes to conquer. Gather up to 4 players for lively couch play sessions, showcasing your skills with jaw-dropping shots. Compete in live tournaments for exciting rewards and leave your mark on the world of golf!

Concord

So I am going to be unpopular here. But I wasn't popular in school, I am not popular now, jokes on you I've always been hated! Anyway, I don't get the hatred for Concord. To me it is a fun looking team based shooter that has likable characters and unique environments. I actually especially like the way it encourages players to diversify which character they use and not just stick to one main. The preview was fun and people seemed to have come away form it pleasantly surprised! Do I think it'll be game of the year? No. Do I think I will have fun playing it with a group of friends? Sure!
Here is the description:

Assemble your crew of Freegunner space outlaws and team up online with friends for thrilling 5v5 PVP modes across the galaxy in Concord. Concord is a new team-based first-person shooter for PS5® and PC*. Handpick your personal roster of Freegunners from the crew of the Northstar – a group of outlaws and adventurers working as guns-for-hire.

Squirrel With A Gun

This game has gone from something I thought was a silly gimmick, to a game that looks like an incredible fun and challenging platformer/shooter. It almost makes me think about what a Rocket Racoon game would look/feel like. The description for the game is as follows:

Squirrel, meet gun. As the neighborhood’s most obnoxious rodent, develop a knack (and a love?) for crime and mayhem in pursuit of golden acorns in this nutty sandbox shooter and puzzle platformer. Fight tooth, claw, and gun to escape a secret underground facility and defeat the Agents.

Emio: The Smiling Man

Alright let's address the 'man with a paper bag on his head' in the room. This game was announced and confused the hell out of all of us! I have not played the other games in this franchise, but I love a detective game, and Emio: The Smiling Man has me reaching for my deer stalker, pipe and paper shopping bag! Here is the Description:

Unmask the truth in a dark, twisted thriller for Nintendo Switch: Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club. Solve the tragic murder of a junior high school student, where a creepy clue recalls cold cases from the past and an urban legend about a killer with a disturbing modus operandi.

Interview with Kyle Banks: Developer Of Upcoming Game 'Farewell North'

'Farewell North' is an upcoming indie title from Kyle Banks and 'Mooneye Studio'. I am particularly excited about it because it is about two things I love - Scotland and dogs! I was lucky enough to get an interview with Kyle about the game and the studio. Farewell North Review

Platforms: Nintendo Switch, Windows, Xbox, Mac Release Date: 16th August 2024  Farewell North is a masterclass in storytelling by developer  Kyle Banks that takes you on a physical and emotional journey through the remote islands of northern Scotland. In Farewell North you play as a border collie called Chesley as you help your human through grief and support them as they try to move forward with their life. The game really nails the feeling of being a dog. Not that I have ever been a dog, but you know what I mean! You are encouraged to explore, dig, and chase wildlife to help your human companion on their journey. I particularly liked a mechanic where in certain areas a path may be blocked, so you have to look at it through the gap between two trees to unblock the way. It is almost like this game explains all the bizarre behavior that dogs have, and made me see things from a dog's eye view!  There were a few moments in which you had to herd sheep and these sections I did find a l

Crow Country Review

Platforms: PS4/5, Xbox Series S/X, Microsoft  When playing a specific section of Alan Wake II earlier this year I said to myself 'not enough horror games are set at an abandoned theme park.' Indie developer SFB games read my mind and said "don't worry dude, we got you!". Take the eerie sounds of Silent Hill, the resource management and puzzles of Resident Evil and the sprite design of the original final fantasy VII and you have yourself  'Crow Country'. Crow Country is a survival horror, PS1 looking, game that even includes tank controls and overly difficult aiming! It is exactly what I want from a survival horror and the game left me nostalgic and pining for more games like this. Now, don't worry there is an option to use modern controls, so don't let that put you off, I am just a crazy person and wanted to feel the frustration I felt all those years ago playing Resident Evil 1 for the first time! Exploring this game is an absolute treat! It is so
